Batur, before it's light
Everyone does this day. Most people do it badly: a minibus, a crowd, and a summit shared with two hundred phones. This is the private version.
“We were back at the villa by half eleven and still had the whole day in front of us. I had assumed the sunrise would cost us the afternoon.”
Handled by mePickup, jeep, breakfast, entries and the drive home. You bring a jumper, because it's cold up there.
What the day is
- 1A driver at your gate. No meeting point, no waiting in the dark. He knows the villa and the gate code.
- 2Jeep to the rim. 4×4 up the caldera road, so you watch the light arrive instead of climbing through it.
- 3Breakfast at the top. Hot coffee and something to eat, set up while you're looking the other way.
- 4The 1963 lava field. Black rock that ran and then stopped. Genuinely strange, and almost always empty.
- 5Hot springs, then home. A long soak, a coffee farm if you want one, and back before lunch.
